Abstract
Novel types of short- and long-range order can bring forth surprising physical behaviors. The characterization and construction of such unique geometries can thus help novel material design. In this seminar talk, we will discuss three examples of complex spatial structures and what geometry can tells us about their remarkable physical properties: (1) a hidden long-range order known as disordered hyperuniformity; (2) network structures with photonic band gaps, and (3) nanorough surfaces that reduce the adhesion forces of bacteria.
