Abstract

In this thesis, III–V semiconductor nanowires will be studied for advanced multilayer photovoltaic devices. In particular, we will focus on the optical response of GaInP/InP nanowires on a substrate under solar illumination, calculating the short-circuit current density, the open-circuit voltage and the efficiency, while taking into account realistic optical constants of the materials. The calculations will be performed using the multilayer scattering method and finite-element simulations. Within this framework, the multilayer scattering method has been extended to compute the light absorption at every position along the length of the multilayer nanowire array, facilitating the analysis of current matching — a critical factor for the optimization of the efficiency of tandem type solar cells. The ultimate goal is to determine the optimal geometric and material parameters that maximize the theoretical efficiency of such devices.
